Amazing grip for dragon and contact staff - woot! We are excited to offer the incredible Nimbus Grip from Dark Monk. This silicone foam grip performs similar to the popular Goat Grip, with nice padding and incredible tackiness in wet and dry conditions, but it lasts way longer and is easy to install with its adhesive backing.

Nimbus Grip is very high quality, long-lasting material. Here is the description from the lovely people at Dark Monk:
"Nimbus Grip is a silicone foam based grip and is the latest in staff grip technology. It combines the best features of EPDM foam (great in moist or dusty conditions and slightly squishy for enhanced griping) with the additional benefits of being silicone based (much higher durability, natural heat resistance)."

Sold by the roll (450cm).

Lead times & shipping

Standard lead time

Nimbus grip is typically in stock and will be shipped out within 4 business days, often faster. If you are in a rush, please select Express shipping and leave a note on your order with the date you need it by, and we'll do our best to make magic happen.

Comes with

  • 1x roll of nimbus grip
  • 1x roll of electrical tape
  • 1x roll of self-fusing silicone tape

Nimbus Grip is almost 2mm thick and adds about 4mm to the diameter of your raw shaft. If this is more than your previous grip, your staff will roll along your body bit faster, which is often preferred, especially for a dragon staff.

How much grip to get?

This 450cm roll is enough for 143cm (4.7 feet) of 22mm (7/8") shaft. The shaft diameter makes a big difference in the amount of grip used.

Length of nimbus grip needed per 30cm (~1 foot) of shaft length:

  • 22mm (~7/8") shaft: 95cm (3.1') per 30cm (1 foot) of shaft
  • 19mm (~3/4") shaft: 84cm (2.8') per 30cm (1 foot) of shaft
  • 15mm (~5/8") shaft: 69cm (2.3') per 30cm (1 foot) of shaft
  • 12mm (~1/2") shaft: 57cm (1.9') per 30cm (1 foot) of shaft

This is enough to grip any large contact/dragon staff, just enough for 2 smaller contact staves, plenty for double-staves, and just enough for small triple-staff if you don't go all the way to the ends.

Depending on your needs, you may want to only grip the middle 1/2 to 3/4 of your staff to save grip, expose the shaft material or decorative tape because it looks dope, and/or avoid flame on a fire staff.

For dragon staff: you may want to grip most of the length between the hubs for maximum playable area.

Features & specs

Nimbus grip

This silicone foam grip performs similar to the popular Goat Grip, with nice padding and incredible tackiness in wet and dry conditions, but it lasts way longer.

To install:
  • remove your old grip
  • clean the surface with alcohol or soapy water to remove any residues or oils
  • wrap on your new grip, removing the liner as you go - don't stretch it too tight! Just lightly snug/ almost no stretch
  • trim the ends flush with a knife or scissors.
  • Wrap the ends in ~2 layers of electrical tape. DO NOT STRETCH, or it will shrink back over time and expose some messy adhesive. Gaffers tape also works well.

See video for detailed instructions:
This video currently shows "gravity grip" which we discontinued due to low durability and high cost when we discovered the superior "nimbus grip". It also shows finishing the ends with elastomer bands, but these were very difficult to apply so we now include electrical tape instead, which is super easy to install and repair.

Tip: Do not stretch the electrical tape, it will shrink back to its original size and leave exposed adhesive.  You may also use gaffer's tape or any other tape you prefer :)

Nimbus grip and fire resistance

Nimbus grip is silicone and very fire resistant, and the Gaffers tape that we use to finish it in-house is fairly fire resistant, but there may be situations where the flame from your wicks is moving onto the tape for long enough to damage it. To handle extended contact with flame, you may want to finish the end with self-fusing silicone tape, which is included with each roll of Nimbus grip and is available on flowtoys.com.

The down-sides to the silicone tape is that it can more easily tear, and it does not have adhesive and can roll up the shaft if rubbed against staves or other objects, like when pulling out of a bag. This is why we do not recommend it unless it is needed.

To apply:
  • Using clean fingers: wrap a small section of the end of your grip, overlapping onto the shaft.
  • Cut and push onto itself to fuse.
  • Stretch it slightly when doing this, but not too tight or it will tear more easily. do at least 3 layers to make it durable, and less likely to roll up.
